Woodfired Heathcote Tempranillo: The Newest Addition to De Bortoli Wines' Award-Winning Range

Media Release, May 2024

De Bortoli Wines proudly introduces the newest addition to its renowned Woodfired range: the Woodfired Heathcote Tempranillo. This addition is a testament to our ongoing commitment to excellence, building upon the success of its predecessors.

Since 2015, the Woodfired range has been acclaimed for its excellence, amassing 105 awards, including trophies, platinum, gold, and silver medals. Most recently, the Woodfired Heathcote Shiraz earned a gold medal at the UK International Wine Challenge (IWC), achieving a remarkable score of 95 points. This achievement speaks to our dedication to crafting wines that authentically reflect the unique terroir of Heathcote.

Crafted by our Yarra Valley Estate winemaker Jono Thompson, the Woodfired Heathcote Tempranillo captures the essence of Heathcote with its ripe dark cherry characters, complemented by hints of cedarwood and coffee. With a soft and velvety texture, this wine solidifies Heathcote's rising prominence in growing emerging varietals like Tempranillo.

Sourced primarily from the renowned Heathcote Ridge vineyard, nestled in the northern section of Heathcote, this Tempranillo benefits from the region's ancient red Cambrian soils, ideal for producing rich, dark-fruited wines with a grainy texture. The wine was destemmed and fermented at optimal temperatures over a period of 10-20 days, then matured in vats and casks for approximately five months, enhancing its depth and complexity.

As Heathcote's Tempranillo category continues to grow and thrive, Woodfired emerges as a key player in this dynamic space. Producing Tempranillo comes with its own set of challenges; as an early ripening variety, it demands close attention to achieve optimal ripeness. Balancing granular tannins is also crucial, and this consideration was at the forefront for winemakers when crafting the Woodfired Tempranillo.

The Woodfired Heathcote Tempranillo, with its bold flavours and versatile appeal, is tailored for consumers who relish outdoor adventures, culinary exploration, and social gatherings. It invites wine enthusiasts to embark on a journey of discovery, making it the perfect companion for any occasion. Pair it with chargrilled red chorizo or Pimento peppers for an amazing culinary experience.

It was racked and aerated regularly to soften the abundant grainy tannins and the vineyards were carefully selected for a balance of fruit weight and ripeness.

Best enjoyed / food pairing:This is a versatile tempranillo that can be enjoyed throughout the year, whether it’s a casual dinner at home or accompanying a warm, cozy meal during the cooler months. Our top pairing recommendation for this wine is chargrilled red chorizo and pimento peppers or manchego cheese. We suggest serving the wine in a medium-size red wine glass at a slightly cooler temperature than room temperature.
