De Bortoli Wines Earns Sustainable Winegrowing Australia Certification Across All Vineyards

Media Release, February 2025

De Bortoli Wines has reinforced its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable winemaking, with all its vineyard holdings across the Yarra Valley, Riverina, King Valley, Heathcote, and Rutherglen totalling 906 hectares officially receiving certification from Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA).

A Significant Milestone in De Bortoli's Sustainability Journey

This achievement marks a significant milestone in De Bortoli’s ongoing sustainability journey, aligning with its long-term vision to be a ‘Zero Waste Wine Company.’ SWA certification is awarded to vineyards and wineries that demonstrate best practices in environmental, social, and economic sustainability, ensuring continuous improvement through rigorous independent auditing. As global consumers increasingly seek out sustainably produced wines, this certification emphasises De Bortoli’s role in responsible winemaking at a time when environmental consciousness is reshaping the industry.

De Bortoli’s commitment to sustainability has been a long-term journey beginning over a decade ago, officially becoming a certified member of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia through Freshcare Australia. In 2010, the winery in Bilbul was the first to obtain certification to the Entwine standard. This was followed by SWA certification for the Riverina vineyards in 2021, Rutherglen in 2024, and now, the certification of all De Bortoli vineyards, marking a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing dedication to environmental responsibility.

“For us, sustainability is about respect—respect for the land, for our winemaking traditions, and for future generations,” said Darren De Bortoli, Managing Director. “We are constantly evolving our practices to ensure we are making a positive impact on the environment while continuing to produce wines people love.”

De Bortoli Wines has long been an industry leader in sustainable practices, with initiatives spanning water management, biodiversity conservation, energy efficiency, and waste reduction. The SWA certification further validates the winery’s efforts, providing consumers with the assurance that the wines they enjoy are produced with care for both people and the planet. Additionally, De Bortoli Wines is beginning to incorporate the SWA trustmark on approved wines, starting with the One Line range, allowing consumers to easily identify and support sustainably produced wines.

Towards a More Sustainable Wine Industry

From the historic Riverina where the De Bortoli story began almost a century ago, to the cool-climate Yarra Valley, renowned for its premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, sustainability is woven into the fabric of the business. With this certification, De Bortoli Wines is supporting the broader movement towards a more sustainable wine industry by demonstrating that quality and sustainability can go hand in hand.
