Vintage Conditions
The lead up to the 2009 harvest in the Riverina was one of the best on record, with refreshing rains during Spring and Mild December Temperatures. This lead to fruit with flavour intensity and acid structure not seen for a few years. This all changed at the end of January with an unprecedented heat wave of plus 40 degrees for 14 days which saw ripening stall for 3 weeks. Overall the vintage was good to excellent.
Winemaking
Fruit was sourced from two sites around Griffith. A small percentage of Arneis was added for complexity, as well as some Chardonnay from Adelaide Hills for structure. The juice was cold settled then racked to fermentation. Fermentation took place at moderate temperatures to promote fruitiness and fullness of the wine. The wine then spent 8 months on yeast lees to develop complexity.

An exotic alternative to chardonnay, this blossomy, full bodied white just stops itself from tipping over the edge, and tastes quite delicious with seared scallops or delicate fish dishes.

The Verdelho grape isn't seen all that often, but it makes a tasty, crisp whites like this one, showing pure citrus fruit with freshness and a hint of grapefruit pith bitterness.

"Credit Crunch Drinking. If you haven't tried Verdelho, now's your chance. The very decent 2009 DB Verdelho is light, lush and limey (sorry – couldn't resist the alliteration but it's true). A bit less aromatic than a Riesling, softer than a Sauvignon but a bit zestier than a Semillon, it would be good with Asian-style salads, seafoods (I'm thinking grilled prawns) or noodles> Or just for those “feet-up” moments when you get back from work."
Fiona Beckett, Consumer Online, January 2011
"The De Bortoli DB Verdelho 2009, is a pale white that has fresh floral notes, green fruits, peardrops and a slight acidic hint on the nose. As you taste it you get a mouthful of fruit and tangy clean freshness with some slight acidity. It's a wine that has a nice refreshing quality and although light it has some length on the palate. It's a white that you could enjoy on its own, but would be a great accompaniment to a light lunch. We had it with some Chinese food and its clean sharpness came through really well, it could also go equally as well with seafood or delicate fish dishes."

"Made by the family-operated De Bortoli winery in the Yarra valley n Australia, this ripe and forward style shows peachy fruit, backed up by punchy fresh acidity. If you're bored with bland Sauvignon then try this to waken your palate right up. Great with seafood and all kinds of sushi."
