Despite being largely clay based, the soils are well structured and generally require minimal application of fertiliser. Clay-loam soils also have high water holding capacities, so additional irrigation, if required at all, is generally not needed until after fruit set. The topsoil (A1) is a grey clay-loam consisting of up to 10% organic matter. It lies over a poorer bleached clay-loam A2 Horizon.
