Yarra Valley Reserve Release Riesling 2011

Region
Yarra Valley

Appearance
Light straw with vibrant green tinges.

Bouquet
Very fragrant, minerally, exotic Riesling aromas.

Palate
Palate shows texture with lifted florals. Good balance of acidity, extract and mouthfeel.

Vintage Conditions
The 2010 –2011 growing season saw our earliest bud burst for sometime. Good rainfall during the growing season gave ideal conditions for the development of quite exotic Riesling flavours. Fruit was hand picked on a “bloody cold” morning.

Winemaking
Fruit is destemmed and gently pressed with all juice being included. Cold settling for 24 hours and then racking and inoculating with a selected strain of yeast. Here it was allowed to complete fermentation until the balance of acidity, mouthfeel and extract was just right. The wine was then sulphured to stop the fermentation, stabilised and bottled.

"Riesling has never been a Yarra highlight, but that changed when Rheingau experience of Sarah Fagan met in 2011 season. An appealing early drinker in a textural, off dry style of juicy stone fruits, figs and exotic spice."

Tyson Stelzer, Wine 100, April 2012

"Sarah Fagan is a young, intuitive winemaker, though experience working vintage in Germany a few years ago has given her an insight into the complexity of riesling, a less common variety in the valley. There are several under the De Bortoli label with the reserve made from estate grown fruit. It’s a joyous, delicious drink. Fine and pure with some Meyer lemon, ginger spice, soft-yet-defined acidity and a hint of sweetness adding to its weight, accentuating the texture. Love it on its own or with grilled whiting and garlicky aioli."

"A restrained, undeveloped talcum powder and faintly floral almost lavender-like aroma. It's soft, light, etheral, seamless and filigreed (just 11.5 per cent alcohol). A delicious wine that I really wanted to drink pronto! "

Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine , March 2012
