Vintage Conditions
The lead up to the 2009 harvest in the Riverina was one of the best ever, with refreshing spring rains and mild December temperatures. The result was flavour intensity and acid structure not seen for several years. All this changed at the end of January when a heat wave caused temperatures to soar above 40°C for two weeks. This halted the ripening process and the vines ‘shut down’ for three weeks. Nevertheless vintage quality overall was good to excellent.
Winemaking
Fruit was selected by the winemaker and picked when it had lots of vibrant, fresh red fruit flavours. In the winery it was cold soaked on skins for 48 to 72 hours for colour and flavour. Fermentation was arrested when the wine reached optimum sweetness.
