DBHV Village Syrah 2010

Region
Lower Hunter Valley

Appearance
Bright ruby red.

Bouquet
Compote of red berries with elegant soft spices, backed up with a hint of graphite.

Palate
Raspberries and strawberries that are soft, delicate and lingering. Slides along the palate offering drinkability and length. A delight!

Vintage Conditions
Vintage conditions treated us to fine and mild weather, with dry conditions offering a favourable maturation period and excellent ripening conditions. This allowed fruit of the highest quality to be hand picked at select maturity.

Winemaking
Fruit was sourced from our Wills Hill Vineyard from the blocks planted in duplex brown clay loam soil containing decomposed laterite granite known as “Ironstone”. Fruit was picked in the cool of the morning by hand and transported to the winery in small 10kg buckets. Hand sorting was then conducted to eliminate sub-standard bunches. 100% fruit was placed whole in a stainless steel fermenter, sealed and then left to its own devices. 100% whole bunch - carbonic maceration, indigenous yeast pumped once daily and pressed after 14 days reaching a maximum of 28°C degrees. 100% French oak (10% new) for six months.

The move by De Bortoli into the Hunter Valley caused a few puzzled looks at the time, and it's been a low-key part of the business. Nonetheless, this is an interesting, indeed challenging, wine with its bright garnet colour, and a fragrant and spicy bouquet, with plenty of whole bunch/herbaceous notes offsetting the black cherry and plum fruit. Showing some tar and chewy tannin on the palate, it is not a conventional nouveau style unless that is a reference to its modest alcohol.

"Plenty of stalks and stems here - not something we're used to seeing in Hunter shiraz, but welcome adventure in style. Musky strawberry and light red cherries, pink musk too. Fine yet firm tannins, and a meaty finish - detailed and full of interest."
