“Without the local community what the business has achieved would never have been possible. Essentially, I just want to give back to the community and make sure that the area becomes a better place to live and has opportunities to grow.”
Ben De Bortoli is the oldest child of De Bortoli Wines Managing Director, Darren De Bortoli and his wife Margot. He currently works as a cellar hand at the family’s Yarra Valley Estate, something he’s been doing since he completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of NSW last year.
Ben’s keen to pursue a career in finance but is also interested in experiencing the “grunt work” (everything from driving tractors to setting up lines for additions and transfers) involved in the winery, a vital way to get a more complete picture of how the business operates. He’s also an eager traveller. After finishing school he visited Europe, the UK and South America and has a keen interest in Asia, both as a place to experience and as one of the businesses most promising export markets.
Ben is a keen hunter and not only helps keep the rabbit population down on the Yarra Valley Estate, but also keeps the family supplied with the core ingredient for tasty rabbit rillettes.
